AP 과정은 크게 Two Track으로 봄 학기 AP Exam Test Prep 과정과 가을 학기 AP Course GPA 관리 과정으로 운영됩니다.

가을학기 AP 과목 GPA 관리 과정은 대학 강의 수준의 학습량을 요구하는 AP 과목 특성상 학생들이 개념과 컨셉을 이해하고 과제물을 해결하는데 어려움이 많습니다. 더 나아가 GPA와 직접적으로 관련 있는 학교 시험준비 역시 힘들어하는 학생들이 많습니다. 단순히 언어의 문제일수도 있고, 적성의 문제일 수도 있습니다. 공부하는 방법을 모를 수도 있고, 어쩌면 공부하기 싫어서 손을 놓고 있는 경우일 수도 있습니다. AP 캡스톤 (AP Capstone)

IB 과정이 전 세계 국제학교들로 널리 보급되면서 경쟁력을 갖추기 위해
College Board가 2014년부터 도입한 프로그램으로
AP 과정의 부족한 부분을 채운 AP의 IB Diploma 버전으로 보실 수 있습니다.
다만 IB Diploma 과정과 다르게 AP Capstone 과정은 졸업 전
11, 12학년에서 2년과정을 연속적으로 수행하지 않고,
Year 1 + Year 2 과정으로 구분되어 있습니다.
학생 스스로 Year 1 과정을 10학년 또는 11학년에, Year 2 과정을
11학년 또는 12학년에 선택 해서 과정을 수료할 수 있습니다.

AP 캡스톤 (AP Capstone) 프로그램 구성

Year 1: AP Seminar (AP 세미나)│10학년 또는 11학년

일반적인 학교 교과 AP 과목 수업과 차별화된 AP Seminar 과목은 논리적, 창의적, 비판적 사고력을 키울 수 있도록 학생들이 real-world issue (현실적인 글로벌 이슈)들을 선정하고 연구, 분석, 탐구, 해결책 제시 등의 과정을 거치면서 다양한 방식으로 발표하는 프로젝트를 수행합니다. 1년간의 과정이 마무리 되는 시기인 5월에 AP 시험을 응시하고 3점 이상을 취득한 학생만 Year 2 과정으로 넘어갈 수 있습니다.

Year 2: AP Research (AP 리서치)│11학년 또는 12학년

학생이 개인적 관심이 있는 주제를 선정해서 1년간 심층적인 연구를 진행합니다. 5월에 AP 시험 대신 5,000자 길이의 Academic Thesis Paper (논문)를 제출하고 본인의 논문에 대한 Public Presentation (논문 발표│Oral Defense 포함)으로 마무리하고 5점 만점 기준의 점수를 받습니다. AP Research를 통해 학생들은 연구의 주제선정, 계획수립, 진행, 발표함에 있어 윤리적 연구 관행, 방법론, 정보 수집과 활용 등 학술논문 쓰기 일련의 과정을 배우게 됩니다.

Pre-AP 과정 (Pre-AP Courses)

Pre-AP 수업은 AP 수업 전 단계로써 일반 학교교과 Regular 수업 보다 더 많은 학습량을 요구합니다. 2018년 가을부터 일부 학교에 Pre-AP 수업이 새롭게 도입되었습니다. 5 과목으로 시작해서 2022년부터는 모든 AP 과목들에 해당하는 Pre-AP 과목들이 준비됩니다. Pre-AP 수업은 9학년부터 시작 할 수 있고, 성적이 좋은 학생들만 들을 수 있는 AP 수업과 달리 누구나 신청해서 들을 수 있습니다. Pre-AP는 교과 과목으로 학교 GPA에만 성적이 반영되고 5월에 응시할 수 있는 AP Exam 같은 표준화 시험(standardized test)은 없습니다.

AP 과정 (Advanced Placement Courses)

AP Courses는 미국 대학교 교양│기본 과정 수업을 고등학교 커리큘럼에서 선 이수 할 수 있는 제도입니다. 1년간 학교 수업시간에 공부하고 학년말에 공식 시험 (AP Exam)을 응시할 수 있습니다. 시험 결과에 따라 대학 입학 후 학점으로 인정 받을 수 도 있습니다. 개설되는 AP 과정이 해당 고등학교에 따라 다르며 일반적으로 대학 입학실적이 좋은 명문고등학교와 재학생수가 많은 고등학교에 더 많고 다양한 AP 과정이 개설 됩니다. 최근에는 대학부설 온라인 과정도 많아지고 있습니다.

AP 시험 (AP Exam)

AP Exam은 학교에 따라 편차가 있을 수 밖에 없는 각 고등학교의 AP 과정을 학생이 잘 이수 했는지 객관적으로 평가하는 표준화 시험(standardized test)입니다. 시험 주관사인 칼리지보드(College Board)는 매년 5월 공식 시험을 실시하고 시험 점수는 1점~5점, 대학학점 인정 점수는 4점 이상입니다. (일부 대학은 3점부터 인정)

SAT 시험 점수와 마찬가지로 AP 시험 점수도 미국대학 지원뿐만 아니라 홍콩대학, 싱가포르대학, 일본대학(국제학부 과정), 그리고 한국대학(수시전형 해외고 졸업자, 국제계열, 재외국민 전형 등) 지원 시에도 매우 중요한 전형 요소 및 지원자격으로 활용되고 있습니다.

Regular 과목 수업 보다 훨씬 많은 학습량이 요구 되기 때문에 어려운 공부를 통해서 공부하는 방법을 채득하게 되고 해당 과목을 넓고 깊게 이해하게 됩니다.

고등학교 재학 중 AP 과목들을 선택한다는 것은 명문대학들이 좋아하는 rigorous 한 academic coursework, 즉 학문적 도전 (academic challenge)를 보여주는 일차적인 방법입니다. 학문적 도전과 성취의 반복은 학습능력을 키워주고 대학 진학 이후의 학업성취도와도 관련 있습니다. 전 세계 어느 고등학교에서 공부 하더라도 AP 과정이 개설되어 있으면 수업을 듣고 나서 AP Exam 점수로 객관적인 평가 받고 성적표를 제출할 수 있습니다.

+ 3 GPA 관리와 Transcript 상의 전공적합성

AP 과목 선정과 AP Exam 점수는 입학사정관 입장에서 매우 의미 있는 정보입니다. 한 학생의 Transcript를 보면 그 학생의 적성과 관심분야가 보이며, 대학의 입학사정관들은 단순히 성적만 확인하는 것이 아니고 전공적합성을 확인합니다. 학생 입장에서 적성과 맞지 않고 관심 없는 공부를 억지로 하는 것이 쉽지 않기 때문에 학습량이 많은 AP 과목은 자연스럽게 학생의 관심 분야 과목으로 연결됩니다.
물론, AP 과목 수업에서 A를 받는 것이 쉬운 것은 아닙니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 성실히 공부해서 AP 과목 점수를 잘 받으며 GPA 계산시 AP 과목 수업 점수에 weight (가산점)을 주는 학교가 많기 때문에 GPA 관리에 도움이 될 수도 있습니다. Regular 과목 수업에서 A를 받는 것 보다 AP 과목 수업에서 B를 받는 것이 더 좋게 해석되는 경우도 많습니다.

+ 4 대학 지원자격 확보 및 입시 가산점

AP 커리큘럼 학교에 재학하는 학생은 전공과 관련 있는 AP 과목 선택과 시험점수 취득을 강력히 추천합니다. 미국대학의 입학전형에서 AP 과목은 지원자격이 아니지만, 위에서 언급한 부분과 맞물려 명문대 합격생들의 Data를 보면 (재학했던 학교에 AP 과정이 개설 되어있는 교육환경에서는) AP 과목 수도 많고 취득점수도 높습니다. 최근 대학지원 경향은 해외고등학교와 국내국제학교에서 공부한 학생들이 미국대학으로만 진학 하지 않고 한국대학, 홍콩대학, 싱가포르대학, 일본대학으로 지원하는 비율이 매우 높아지고 있습니다. 아시아권 대학의 입시에서는 AP 과목이 필수 지원자격인 전형과 대학이 많고 가산점을 부여합니다.

AP 수업과 대학진학 후 대학교 GPA 사이에 상관 관계가 있다고 보여집니다. 고등학교수업과 대학수업에서 요구되는 학습량과 진도는 비교할 수 없을 만큼 큰 차이가 있기 때문에, 고등학교 재학 중 rigorous 한 수업을 듣지 않았던 학생들이 대학교에 진학해서 학업적으로 매우 힘들어하거나 낙오하는 학생을 흔히 볼 수 있습니다. AP 수업 선택과 AP Exam 응시는 단순히 명문 대학 합격통지서를 받기 위한 것이 아니고 실제로 대학에 입학해서 살아 남느냐 도태되어 버리느냐의 문제입니다.
대학진학 후 수강신청을 할 때 많이 보게 되는 것이 prerequisite(필수 선행 과목) 이수여부 입니다. AP Exam 점수로 prerequisite을 대신 할 수 있는 과목들이 있기 때문에 이 경우 바로 상위 단계의 과목을 수강할 수 있는 장점이 있습니다.

+ 6 시간적, 경제적 효과

많은 미국대학들이 4점~5점의 AP Exam 점수를 취득한 과목을 대학교 입학 후 교양과목 또는 기본 과목의 학점으로 인정해줍니다.
대학교 학점을 미리 이수하고 대학에 입학한 한다는 것은 졸업 전까지 이수해야 하는 남은 학점이 줄어든다는 의미입니다. 대학 졸업 전까지 한 과목이라도 덜 수강 할 수 있다면 한 학기라도 남은 수강 과목 공부에 시간을 더 투자 할 수 있습니다. AP를 통해 많은 과목들을 선 이수하고 입학하면 (전공과 대학에 따라 인정하는 과목 수가 다르지만) 그 만큼 대학교 GPA 관리가 수월해 지거나 남는 시간에 부전공이나 복수전공을 할 수 있는 기회로 활용할 수도 있습니다. 수강 과목 수를 줄일 수 있다는 것은 경제적으로 학비를 줄여준다는 의미입니다. AP로 학점 인정을 많이 받고 대학에 진학하는 학생들이 4년 이내에 대학을 졸업 할 확률이 높습니다. 한 학기 또는 두 학기를 조기 졸업 하는 것과, 역으로 학점이 모자라 한두 학기를 대학에 더 다녀야 하는 상황을 고려해볼 때 등록금과 생활비뿐만 아니라 취직해서 생기는 수입의 기회비용까지 감안하면 조기 졸업생의 경제적 가망 이익은 매우 커집니다.

  • Two sharpened No. 2 pencils (with erasers) for completing multiple-choice answer sheets.

  • Their 6-digit school code. Homeschooled students will be provided with their state or country homeschool code at the time of the exam.
  • A watch that doesn't have internet access, doesn't beep, and doesn't have an alarm.
  • Up to two calculators of the appropriate type if they are taking an AP® Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, or Statistics Exam.
  • A ruler or straightedge, only if they are taking the AP Physics Exam. Protractors are not allowed.
  • The AP Student Pack. Students who do not attend the school where they are taking the exam must also bring a current government-issued or school-issued photo ID. (Additional ID may be requested by authorized test centers outside the U.S.)
  • If applicable, the College Board SSD Student Accommodations Letter, which verifies that the student has been approved for a testing accommodation such as braille or large-type exams.

AP Exam 시험 점수 발송보류 (Score Withholding)

시험 응시일 이후 같은 해 6월 15일까지 점수 발송보류 신청이 가능합니다. 시험 준비가 덜 되었거나 시험 당일 컨디션 조절 실패 등으로 낮은 점수를 대학에 보내고 싶지 않을 때 특정 과목을 지정해서 시험점수 발송보류 해 놓을 수 있습니다. 추후 발송보류를 다시 되돌릴 수도 있습니다.

1) 시험 답안지 작성 시 (예비소집일 또는 학교 시험)
  • 예비소집 당일 또는 학교 Pre-administration Session에서 응시과목 시험 답안지 작성 시 신청
  • Answer Sheet 첫 페이지에 표시 함, 해당 과목을 1개 대학에 점수 발송보류 신청, 그 대학으로 해당 과목은 점수 발송되지 않음
  • 발송보류가 되어있는 과목은 추후 다른 대학으로 점수 발송 시에도 발송보류로 지정할 수 있음
  • 발송보류를 다시 풀 수 있음
2) 현장 시험 점수 발송보류 신청을 못 한 경우

AP Exam 시험 점수 취소 (Score Cancellation)

AP Exam 시험 점수 발송 (Score Report)

AP 시험 점수를 원하는 대학 및 기관으로 주관사인 College Board에서 직접 발송 하는 것을 Score Reporting이라고 합니다. 거의 모든 대학은 학생이 스스로 보낸 성적표 파일이나 종이 성적표를 받아주지 않고 시험 주관사로부터 학생을 거치지 않고 직접 발송되어 접수된 성적표만 공식 성적표로 인정합니다.

1) Answer Sheet Score Reports (무료)
  • 기관 또는 대학으로 무료 시험 점수 예약 발송 가능
  • 예비소집 당일 또는 학교 Pre-administration Session에서 응시과목 시험 답안지 작성 시 신청
  • 추후 시험 점수 발표 후 자동으로 발송될 대학 및 기관을 미리 지정해서 신청 해 놓는 방법
  • 보내고 싶은 대학 또는 scholarship program의 four-digit code를 넣어야 함
2) Online Score Report Order (유료)
